It is appropriate that this stone, dedicated to the memory of all Victorian Police members who have lost their lives in the service of their community should be located here, because it was here that in 1863 Constable Daniel O’Boyle was killed, while escorting a prisoner a short distance from this lock-up to the original courthouse. O’Boyle is one of four officers listed here who have died while on duty in the Warrnambool region. Sergeant Dobbs died in1859 as a result of injuries received when attempting an arrest. Constable William Sharrock was one of ten people who drowned in the sinking of the Nestor at the Hopkins River in 1921. Constable James Brewis, stationed at Lismore, died when his car overturned while he was on active duty.
