If you look closely you will notice numerous holes in the ground surrounded by balls of mud. These are the burrows of Engaeus sericatus Hairy Burrowing Crayfish. This cryptic species maintains shelter in a network of tunnels, allowing access to groundwater and forage on surrounding land at night. The Hairy Burrowing Crayfish is listed as Vulnerable in Victoria and is found mainly in the South West.
