Bio-cultural Values
The Eastern Maar are Traditional Owners of south-western Victoria and are a part of the larger Maar Nation. Bio-cultural is a term used to describe Eastern Maars connection with Country, and acknowledge the inherent cultural significance of plants and animals, land water and sky as they connect with Maar and Maar Country.
This is a whole of country approach to Ngootyoon Meerreeng – Ngootyoon Maar (Healthy Country – Healthy People). It is from the top of the mountain to the ocean floor. The air above and the rock below and everything in between. By reintroducing the land and water management practices of our Ancestors, we will see enhanced bio-diversity for the benefit of all.
“Meerreeng, Parreeyt, pa Moorrnong (Land, Water and Sky) are zoetic constitutional balancing components of the greater Maar bio-cultural landscape. With respect and adherence to Maar law/lore, a reciprocating relationship with these elements, each remain the key definers of what and who the Eastern Maar are. These definers are manifested in our strong, ongoing, and continuously evolving and living culture, unmovable identity, and our inherent obligation to safeguard our Ancestral Territory from the existential threat of ongoing colonisation.”
