This memorial was once much more impressive, consisting of this plinth which stood topped with a 25’ granite obelisk to commemorate the death in 1885 of the revered British General Charles George Gordon at the siege of Khartoum, Sudan. A very popular British hero, his death was mourned throughout the British Empire, leading to monuments, towns, streets and institutions named in his honour. In Warrnambool a rowing club and a boat were named after him. In 1903 Warrnambool suffered two sizeable earthquakes, 6 weeks apart, which caused damage throughout the town, and destabilised the memorial. The obelisk was removed and only the plinth remains, embedded in the hillside.
Beyond this, another memorial, erected in 1997 commemorates the 150th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool in 1847.
